Does insufficient sleep explain differences in aging between Blacks and Whites? Lead Investigator: Azizi Seixas Institution : NYU School of Medicine E-Mail : azizi.seixas@nyumc.org Proposal ID : 1095 Proposal Description: i. To determine the relationship between traumatic brain injury (TBI), sleep (sleep apnea, insomnia) and brain health problems (COGSTAT, ALZDIS and Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR)) among blacks and whites. ii. To determine whether history of TBI is independently associated with brain health problems, controlling for demographic, behavioral, and clinical factors. iii. Does sleep mediate or moderate the relationship between TBI and brain health problems, controlling for demographic, behavioral, and clinical factors. iv. Do the models in aims ii and iii vary by race , specifically among blacks, whites and Hispanics. Two of my colleagues, Lidia Glodzik M.D. and Mony de Leon Ed.D will be performing the imaging. We will be performing an exploratory analysis investigating the role of TBI and sleep on the concept of accelerated aging which will be a composite score of hippocampal volume and white matter hyperintensity volume (HIPPATR, IMAGMWMH and IMAGEWMH).
